A moderate earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was detected near Antigua early Tuesday morning, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre.
The tremor occurred at approximately 5:31 am local time, with the epicenter located 91 kilometers south-southeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. The earthquake struck at a depth of 144 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.
The epicenter was positioned at latitude 16.34N and longitude 61.57W, placing it closest to Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, which lies just 10 kilometers north-northwest of the earthquake’s origin point. Brades, Montserrat was 87 kilometers southeast of the epicenter.
The UWI Seismic Research Centre noted that the location was automatically calculated by computer algorithms and remains preliminary. The data is subject to potential revisions pending evaluation by SRC analysts.
Given the earthquake’s moderate magnitude and significant depth, it is unlikely to have caused damage or been widely felt across the region. Deep earthquakes typically produce less intense shaking at the surface compared to shallow events of similar magnitude.
