Driver Fined for Overtaking Ambulance

An emergency ambulance was forced to take evasive action on All Saints Road after a rental car driver attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver involving multiple vehicles.

Cadean Tonge, 23, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel yesterday where he admitted to careless driving. The court heard that Tonge overtook four vehicles on January 14th in quick succession, including the ambulance which had to swerve to prevent a collision.

Chief Magistrate Emanuel imposed a fine of $800, giving Tonge a two-week deadline to pay or serve 30 days in prison. The defendant, who represented himself in court, benefited from a one-third reduction in the penalty due to his early guilty plea.

While Tonge had no previous convictions and had been cooperative with police during the investigation, the decision to overtake multiple vehicles, particularly an emergency response vehicle, was identified as a significant aggravating factor in the case.

  10. $800 can’t match the risk. If you interfere with an emergency vehicle, that should be automatic license suspension

  11. That could have cost someone their life. Ambulances don’t move fast for fun somebody was in danger. $800 too light for that kind of recklessness
