Members of the Indian diaspora in Antigua and Barbuda came together on Monday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of India’s Republic Day, celebrating the principles of democracy, unity and national pride that define the Republic of India.
The observance began early Monday morning with a Flag Hoisting Ceremony held at the residence of Honorary Consul of India, Vijay Tewani. The event was attended by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Clarence Pilgrim; Deputy Permanent Secretary Karen Cabrall; Ambassador Anthony Liverpool; officials from Metropolitan University; and members of the Indian community.

Although unable to attend, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chet Greene formally conveyed his apologies and issued an official diplomatic note to India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. The message reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship, mutual respect and longstanding cooperation between India and Antigua and Barbuda.
Speaking during the ceremony, Honorary Consul Vijay Tewani reflected on the significance of this year’s Republic Day theme, “Vande Mataram,” noting that it symbolizes deep love for the motherland and honours the sacrifices made for India’s freedom and progress.
Tewani also highlighted the contributions of the Indian community to Antigua and Barbuda, expressing gratitude for the hospitality and sense of belonging extended to them.
He encouraged members of the diaspora to continue honouring their heritage, strengthening people-to-people ties, and fostering cooperation between both nations as they work toward a shared future grounded in respect and partnership.

Does Antigua and Barbuda have a community in India? So many nationalities have communities in the country, yet the country doesn’t have one of its own in theirs. Their countries don’t want us, but we embrace them with open arms.
Where was this held and how big is the Indian community here?
