Antiguan Students in Cuba Call for Immediate Government Action Amid Rising Tensions

A group of Antiguan students currently studying in Havana are urgently appealing to Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Ambassador George Goodwin for immediate intervention, as Cuba prepares to enter an apparent “State of War.” The students say they are left in the dark about safety measures and fear for their wellbeing amid escalating political tensions.

“So basically, Cuba seems to be in a state of war, and no conversations are being directed towards us, we don’t know anything that’s happening. Other Caribbean embassies actually have meetings planned to give updates of what’s happening. We haven’t heard anything from our Ambassador. Nobody talks to us, nobody tells us anything. We have to try and beg these people to give us attention,” one student said.

The students also expressed frustration over a letter written on social media, which they say received little to no attention. Many reported fear of publicly raising concerns, citing potential mistreatment.

The students’ fears come as the United States ramps up pressure on Cuba. President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency over “unusual and extraordinary threats” from the Cuban government, citing links to foreign powers and terrorist organizations. The order takes effect on January 30 and includes new sanctions and tariffs aimed at cutting off resources to Havana.

Amid these developments, international embassies and companies are reviewing evacuation plans, heightening the sense of urgency for foreign nationals in Cuba. The students say they remain uncertain about their ability to leave the island safely and are calling for clear guidance and direct communication from Antigua’s diplomatic representatives.

The situation has placed Antiguan students in an unprecedented position, caught between a tightening geopolitical crisis and a lack of information from home authorities. Their pleas underscore the urgent need for intervention to ensure their safety in Havana.
