Welcome Ceremony hosted in honor of newly arrived Ghanaian Medical Professionals
A message of shared heritage and renewed partnership framed a ceremonial welcome on Saturday night for more than 100 Ghanaian health professionals now in Antigua and Barbuda, who are bolstering the public healthcare system.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Health joined Governor General Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams at the event, which underscored the deep historical and human connections between the Caribbean and Africa.

Addressing the gathering, Sir Rodney—himself a physician—said the arrival of the Ghanaian nurses and health officials represents more than a response to staffing needs. He described it as an affirmation of long-standing bonds forged through shared experiences and a commitment to cooperation grounded in respect and purpose. The moment, he noted, reflects what can be achieved when nations collaborate with intention.
Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph echoed that sentiment, stressing that the deployment of approximately 120 professionals is a deliberate move to strengthen the health system. Nurses, he said, are central to patient care and continuity, and their integration will help build resilience and capacity across hospitals and clinics.

Sir Molwyn also highlighted Africa’s contribution to global healthcare, pointing out that many of the world’s leading medical practitioners trace their training and roots to the continent. He added that the partnership with Ghana could pave the way for broader cooperation, including trade and the recruitment of educators in science and mathematics.
Permanent Secretary Stacey Gregg-Paige acknowledged the personal and professional commitment required to relocate across continents. She praised the group’s willingness to serve and assured them of institutional support, emphasizing that the Ministry will prioritize their welfare and ensure they are treated with fairness and dignity as integral members of the national health workforce.
