The Ministry of Works is renewing its appeal to motorists and pedestrians to cooperate with safety measures at road construction sites, as road upgrade projects continue across Antigua and Barbuda.
The call follows ongoing concerns about traffic cones being moved or removed, as well as vehicles driving onto newly paved surfaces before they are fully cured or dried. Officials warn that these actions not only pose serious safety risks but also threaten to damage fresh roadworks, leading to costly repairs and project delays.
Under the message “Respect the Cones,” the department is reminding commuters that traffic cones and barricades are placed deliberately to protect road users, construction crews, and the integrity of the works being carried out. Blocked-off areas are designated unsafe for both vehicles and pedestrians, and members of the public are being urged not to enter these zones under any circumstances.
Motorists are also advised to comply with instructions given by road crews on site, particularly in areas where traffic flow has been altered. Public Works officials stressed that newly paved asphalt and concrete require specific curing and drying times, and it is not possible to determine by appearance alone when a surface is safe to use.
The department expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation, noting that responsible behavior on the nation’s roads is critical as infrastructure improvements continue.

Some of us just like our own way
This isn’t rocket science it’s basic common sense. Most Antiguans seems to lack in that field.
It’s scary how many drivers ignore cones and instructions. Someone could get seriously hurt, or worse.
Stricter enforcement might be the only way people learn.
Ayo ungrateful backsides want good roads but don’t have the respect or patience for the process. Ayo need two hard slap and a face push into the cement you damage.
