Shanyea Crump

Twenty-year-old Shanyea Crump will remain behind bars after the Magistrate’s Court declined to grant her bail in connection with pending firearm and cannabis charges.

The young mother, who has an 11-month-old baby, appeared in court this morning alongside her partner, 21-year-old Terry Williams.

While Crump maintained her innocence and entered not guilty pleas to all charges, Williams admitted guilt in both matters before the court.

Despite Williams’ admissions, prosecutors made it clear they intend to proceed against Crump in both cases. The Crown must now prove that she had knowledge of the firearm and cannabis and exercised custody or control over the items along with Williams.

During proceedings, the magistrate reminded the defence that bail in firearm-related matters falls outside the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court. Any application for bail must therefore be taken to the High Court.

The cannabis matter has been scheduled for trial on May 6, with the firearm case set to follow on May 8.

Following the hearing, Crump was granted a brief opportunity to see her infant before being returned to custody.
