Cabinet Approves Recruitment of 20 New Fire Officers to Strengthen National Response

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a proposal from Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin for the recruitment and training of twenty new fire officers to bolster the country’s Fire Division.

Under the plan, five of the newly recruited officers will be assigned to Barbuda, while the remaining fifteen will be deployed across fire stations in Antigua. Officials say the distribution is designed to strengthen fire and emergency response coverage across both islands.

The expansion of the Fire Division is being described as a strategic investment in national safety and resilience. Cabinet members noted that increasing manpower will enhance operational capacity, reduce response times, and improve the overall effectiveness of emergency services.

Particular emphasis was placed on Barbuda, where the addition of dedicated personnel is expected to significantly strengthen emergency preparedness and response, given the island’s geographic layout and unique vulnerabilities.

In addition to improving public safety, the initiative will create employment opportunities for citizens and provide specialised training in emergency services. Cabinet underscored that a well-trained and adequately staffed fire service is essential to protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting institutions responsible for safeguarding public welfare and ensuring that emergency services are properly equipped and staffed to meet the nation’s evolving needs.
