I write out of deep concern on behalf of several employees of Sun Eye Security Services who allege that they have not been paid for nearly two months. Many of these workers are reluctant to speak publicly for fear of victimisation, but their situation has reached a breaking point.
According to the employees, some have gone unpaid for one full month and are now approaching a second month without receiving their salaries. Even more troubling are claims that cheques issued by the company were returned by banks due to insufficient funds. For workers who depend on these wages to meet their basic needs, this is not just an inconvenience, it is a crisis.
Several employees also allege that when they attempted to seek clarification about their outstanding wages, they were met with dismissive responses. In some cases, they claim they were told to return company-issued uniforms before any further discussions about payment would take place.
These workers are security officers individuals entrusted with protecting businesses, properties, and lives across Antigua and Barbuda. Yet they now find themselves struggling to meet rent, utility bills, transportation costs, and other essential expenses. As one worker put it plainly, “We have families to take care of. We just want what we worked for.”
Labour advocates have noted that under the labour laws of Antigua and Barbuda, employers are obligated to pay wages within agreed timeframes.
Furthermore, issuing cheques without sufficient funds may carry serious legal implications. Employees facing wage disputes are generally advised to report the matter to the Labour Department for investigation and mediation.
We respectfully call on the relevant authorities to look into these allegations and ensure that justice is done, not only for these workers but for all employees who may find themselves in similar circumstances.
Sincerely,
A family of one of the workers affected
