The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a recommendation from the Attorney General and Minister responsible for the Police to acquire four additional dogs for the K9 Unit of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.

The expansion will see the addition of two firearm detection dogs, one narcotics detection dog, and one explosives detection dog.

The acquisition package also includes comprehensive training for both the dogs and their handlers to ensure operational readiness and effectiveness.

With the new additions, the K9 Unit will grow to a total of fifteen dogs — a move Cabinet says will significantly enhance the force’s crime-fighting capabilities.

Officials noted that the specialized dogs will provide critical support in detecting illegal firearms, explosives, and illicit drugs, strengthening law enforcement’s ability to respond to evolving security threats.

The expanded unit is also expected to improve public safety outcomes and act as a visible deterrent to criminal activity across the country.

Cabinet further emphasized that investing in specialized training and modern policing tools is essential to maintaining a highly skilled and responsive Police Force.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to equipping officers with the necessary resources to protect lives, property, and national security in Antigua and Barbuda.
