The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued an air quality bulletin advising that conditions across Antigua and Barbuda are expected to deteriorate to moderate levels from Monday night through Friday due to another surge of Saharan dust.
In its 8:45 pm update on Sunday, the Meteorological Service said this marks the third notable surge of Saharan dust affecting the country for 2026.
According to the bulletin, the Air Quality Index (AQI), based on concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), is forecast to range between 51 and 90, placing the country at Air Pollution (Alert) Level II.
While air quality is considered acceptable for most people, officials warned that unusually sensitive individuals may experience moderate health effects.
Sensitive groups include
- People with respiratory illnesses such as asthma
- Individuals with heart disease
- The elderly
- Young children
The Meteorological Service cautioned that active children and adults, along with persons suffering from respiratory conditions, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during this period.
Health officials noted that although the overall health risk remains low for the general population, some pollutants may pose concerns for a small number of people who are particularly sensitive to air pollution.
