The 50th Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis got off to an interesting start as leaders across the region sought to defend against suggestions that regional solidarity was under threat.

Outgoing Chair of CARICOM Prime Minister Andrew Holness sought to create a balance in his remarks, stating that CARICOM was never meant to be a political union but a cooperation of sovereign nations.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in her address, criticised the regional body for their stance on Cuba and Venezuela, positioning her country as ardent defenders of the Trump administration’s regime change policies in the two nations.

She accused CARICOM of being captured by governing parties, citing an unanswered 2022 letter to the Secretary about a Trinidadian citizen she says was kidnapped. She also called out member states for sending political operatives to campaign in other countries’ elections.

The event ended with a Calypso sung by St Kitts and Nevis Minister of Public Utilities Konris Maynard who, in a remarkable moment, changed his song to criticise Trinidad and Tobago for its stance on Cuba while maintaining diplomatic ties with countries like China.
