Minister Joseph Welcomes IAPB Leadership as Antigua and Barbuda Prepares for CHOGM 2026 Eye Health Summit

Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Sir Molwyn Joseph, has reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to advancing eye health during a high-level courtesy call with senior representatives of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

Sir Molwyn received Mr. Peter Holland, Chief Executive Officer of IAPB, and Mr. Simon Darvill, Director of Communications, Campaigns and Events, at the Ministry’s headquarters earlier today. The visit forms part of official engagements ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2026 (CHOGM 2026) and the associated Global Summit for Eye Health.

Antigua and Barbuda is set to play a prominent role in the global launch of the Summit on March 4, 2026 — a milestone that places the twin-island nation at the centre of international efforts to tackle avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

During the discussions, Minister Joseph underscored the Government’s strong policy focus on prevention, early detection, and the integration of eye health services into the broader primary health care system. He noted that Antigua and Barbuda’s involvement in the Global Summit reflects a deliberate and proactive strategy to strengthen national and regional health outcomes.

“Eye health is not a standalone issue; it is integral to quality of life, productivity, and sustainable development,” the Minister indicated, pointing to the need for coordinated action across the health sector.

Mr. Holland commended the Minister’s leadership and vision, describing Antigua and Barbuda as an emerging advocate for eye health within the Commonwealth and the wider global community.

He acknowledged the country’s readiness to elevate the conversation on preventable blindness at the highest political levels.

Mr. Darvill emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships and strong political engagement in ensuring the success of the Summit and its long-term objectives, particularly as CHOGM 2026 approaches.

Also participating in the meeting were Senator Michael Joseph, Minister of State within the Ministry; Permanent Secretary Stacey Gregg-Paige; and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kamaria DeCastro. Discussions focused on policy alignment, implementation priorities, and the next steps required to deliver a successful Summit.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs says it looks forward to deepening collaboration with IAPB as preparations intensify for CHOGM 2026 and the Global Summit for Eye Health, positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a regional leader in the fight against avoidable blindness.

This is something we don’t talk about enough. Eye health affects education, employment, and independence. If Antigua and Barbuda can genuinely lead on this, it’s something to be proud of.

Sometimes we underestimate how many people quietly live with vision problems because treatment feels inaccessible.
