APUA workers walk off the job in protest over working conditions (photo by Robert Andre Emmanuel)
Employees of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) from several workstations walked off the job Monday morning and assembled outside the utility’s headquarters at the corner of Independence Avenue and High Street.
The workers, accompanied by their union representative began their walkout from the Cassada Gardens facility before moving along Old Parham Road and continuing toward the APUA compound at the end of Independence Avenue.
Dozens of workers were seen gathering at the headquarters as the demonstration unfolded.
The protest is centered on a number of longstanding labour concerns, with employees calling for a 10 percent increase in wages, improved pension arrangements, and attention to various workers’ rights issues.

It was not immediately clear how the walkout may affect operations at the utility, which provides electricity, water and telecommunications services across Antigua and Barbuda.
Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
