The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority has recognised a number of key diaspora members and industry partners for their contributions to promoting Antigua and Barbuda in the United States, during its second annual Diaspora Celebration held in Manhattan.

The event brought together tourism officials and supporters of the destination, highlighting the critical role of partnerships in maintaining Antigua and Barbuda’s visibility and reputation in one of its most important source markets.

Among those attending were Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment; Dean Fenton, ABTA’s Director of Tourism, USA; and Michelle Lightfoot of the Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York.
Several individuals were honoured for their behind-the-scenes efforts in ensuring that visitors and dignitaries experience the highest standards of service and hospitality.

Marcia Skyer James, Director of Sales and Marketing at The Kimberly Hotel, was recognised as a trusted partner of the tourism authority, particularly for her ability to secure last-minute accommodations for VIP guests.

Grammy-nominated singer Kathy Sledge, a founding member of Sister Sledge, was also among the honourees. A long-time supporter of Antigua and Barbuda, Sledge has used her platform to promote the destination while contributing to charitable initiatives through her work with the Halo Foundation.

Transportation provider Tabassum Qureshi, known as “Mr. Tabs,” was commended for his reliable service through Ann’s Car and Limo Service, helping to ensure seamless ground transportation for visiting officials and guests.

Veteran steelpan musician Patrick “Johnny” Gomes was recognised for his cultural contributions, particularly his role in bringing Caribbean steelpan music to tourism events in New York. Gomes is a founding member of the City South Steel Orchestra in the Bronx.

Kim Essen, Business Development Manager for the West Coast, was honoured for her dedication to Antigua and Barbuda, including her early volunteer work supporting promotional activities before formally joining the organisation.

Sandra Reid, a former Administrative Officer with the Department of Tourism in New York, was also acknowledged for her longstanding contributions, including facilitating wedding arrangements for couples visiting Antigua and Barbuda. She now serves as an Administrative Executive with the New York State Assembly.

Ashton Gregory, known as “Junior,” was recognised for his dependable logistical support, ensuring that events and activities hosted by the tourism authority run smoothly.

In remarks at the ceremony, Minister Fernandez expressed appreciation for the honourees, noting that tourism success depends not only on natural attractions but also on the people who champion the destination.

“Tourism is built not only on beautiful beaches and world-class experiences, but on the dedication of people who believe in our destination and give their time, talent, and support to help it succeed,” Fernandez said. “These honourees have become part of the extended family of Antigua and Barbuda, and we are deeply grateful for the role they play in strengthening our presence in the United States.”

Dean Fenton echoed the sentiment, emphasising the importance of strong partnerships in the U.S. market.

“The success of Antigua and Barbuda in the U.S. market is made possible by committed partners and friends who consistently go above and beyond,” said Fenton. “Each of these individuals has supported our mission in meaningful ways, helping us showcase the warmth, culture, and hospitality that define Antigua and Barbuda.”

Additional honourees who were unable to attend included Ted Martin of Uncle Ted’s Island Adventures and Tours, Radlie Baptiste of Baptiste Antiguan Experience, Susan Coulton, former Mid-Atlantic Business Development Manager with ABTA, and Jackley Peters of the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda in New York.

The event underscored the tourism authority’s continued efforts to strengthen ties with the diaspora and key partners, while recognising those who play an essential role in elevating Antigua and Barbuda’s profile internationally.
