No Tsunami Threat to Antigua and Barbuda After Strong Atlantic Earthquake
Residents across Antigua and Barbuda can breathe easy after a powerful earthquake in the Atlantic Ocean Saturday morning prompted monitoring by regional officials but posed no tsunami threat to the country.
In an advisory issued at 8:45 a.m., the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service confirmed that a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred earlier in the morning along the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, approximately 1,818 kilometres northeast of Antigua.
According to the agency, the earthquake struck at 8:17 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time at a shallow depth of about 1 kilometre, but based on all available data, there is no significant tsunami threat to Antigua and Barbuda.
Officials noted that while there remains a very small possibility of tsunami waves along Atlantic coastlines nearest to the epicentre, the distance between the earthquake’s location and Antigua and Barbuda means the country is not expected to be affected.
The Meteorological Service advised that no action is required by the public, but encouraged residents to remain attentive to official updates and to use the opportunity as a reminder to review tsunami preparedness plans, particularly those living in coastal areas.
Authorities also indicated that this will likely be the only bulletin issued for this event unless additional information becomes available or conditions change.
Residents are encouraged to continue following updates through official Met Service platforms and local media outlets for any further developments.
