The Gaston Browne-led administration has approved a landmark proposal for the establishment of the country’s first-ever comprehensive National Cardiology Center, a transformative move set to redefine healthcare delivery and save lives.

The initiative represents a major leap forward in the nation’s medical capabilities, bringing advanced, life-saving cardiac care directly to Antigua and Barbuda for the first time.

The proposal, submitted by internationally acclaimed cardiologist Professor Xingwei Zhang through Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, outlines a strategic international partnership designed to deliver world-class cardiology services locally.

At the heart of the initiative is a clear and urgent objective: eliminate the need for Antiguans and Barbudans to travel overseas for critical heart procedures.

The Center will introduce cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical technologies, enabling doctors to treat complex cardiovascular conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias right here at home.

The project builds on a successful two-year collaboration between Hangzhou Normal University, the Ministry of Health, and the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre—laying a strong foundation for what is expected to become a flagship medical institution in the region.

Professor Zhang, a global leader in cardiovascular medicine, will spearhead the initiative. As President of the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University and Director of the Hangzhou Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, he brings unmatched expertise, including experience in more than 20,000 percutaneous coronary interventions and groundbreaking work in cardiac care systems.

Under the approved timeline, the National Cardiology Center is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Key milestones include:
• Procurement of state-of-the-art surgical and diagnostic equipment by August
• A 2–3 month installation and calibration phase to meet international standards
• Deployment of a specialized on-site cardiology team to manage daily operations and emergency care

A dual-presence leadership model will ensure continuous collaboration between Antigua and Hangzhou, providing ongoing training, knowledge transfer, and access to advanced medical resources.

The government has expressed strong confidence that the facility will dramatically improve health outcomes, reduce medical costs for families, and position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional leader in specialized cardiac care.

The National Cardiology Center is also expected to evolve into a premier hub for cardiovascular treatment in the Caribbean, attracting expertise, investment, and potentially medical tourism.

This bold step underscores the Government’s continued commitment to modernizing healthcare infrastructure and delivering high-quality, accessible care to all citizens—marking a new era for public health in Antigua and Barbuda.
