The St. George constituency stands as the largest and one of the most politically significant constituencies in Antigua and Barbuda.
It has long been a battleground for the country’s two major political parties—the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and the United Progressive Party (UPP). In 2018, the ABLP secured the seat through Dean Jonas, while in the 2023 general election, the UPP reclaimed it with Algernon “Serpent” Watts emerging victorious.
As the next election approaches, the political landscape in St. George is once again shifting. Both parties have introduced new standard-bearers: Senator Michael Freeland for the ABLP and Kelton Dalso for the UPP. Notably, this contest comes in the absence of the incumbent, Algernon Watts, who has opted not to seek re-election amid widespread dissatisfaction with his performance across the constituency.
Kelton Dalso, the UPP’s candidate, previously had ties to the Democratic National Alliance. His selection as caretaker for St. George followed a January primary that has drawn scrutiny. According to the UPP, only 16 branch members were eligible to vote, with Dalso securing victory with 9 votes. For many observers, this limited participation raises questions about the breadth of support behind his candidacy.
In contrast, Senator Michael Freeland emerged as the ABLP’s caretaker following a highly competitive and well-attended primary in March 2025. Since then, Freeland has demonstrated a collaborative leadership style, working closely with his counterparts that he contested the primary against, to advance the interests of the constituency in a spirit of cohesion, something the UPP has struggled with significantly.
Freeland brings to the race a deep and proven record of public service. He has served two terms in the Senate, held the role of Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Works, and currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Festivals Commission and Chairman of the Social Protection Board. Additionally, his leadership as President of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association underscores his longstanding commitment to community development.
Beyond titles, Freeland’s experience reflects a rare balance between policy-level leadership and grassroots engagement. He has consistently demonstrated focus, determination, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
Equally important is his strong connection to the St. George constituency. His father, Sir Adolphus Freeland served 5 terms as Parlaimentary Representative for the St. George’s constituency, giving him a firsthand view of strong representation and community leadership.
Senator Freeland is not a distant figure within St. George, he is known, accessible, and trusted by many residents. At a time when St. George requires steady, experienced, and people-centered leadership, Michael Freeland stands out as the candidate best equipped to deliver meaningful representation. His blend of experience, unity-driven leadership, and community connection makes him the clear frontrunner in the race and ultimately, the right man for St. George.

Just like Gaston don’t want anymore Bird’s family in government, it’s the same for St George’s, we don’t want anymore Freeland. One Freeland was enough. Let try something new name for once, the Dalso!!
Freeland still haven’t told the people of Antigua and Barbuda the truth about the Customs auction money—that was the people money. We need someone that we can trust with our money and give accountability for it, too.
