Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre Observes World Autism Awareness Day 2026: Emphasizing Action, Advocacy, and Community Support

PRESS RELEASE

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua April 1, 2026 — On April 2, Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) will join the global community in celebrating World Autism Awareness Day under the theme “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value.” This year’s observance aims to shift the narrative from simple awareness to active acceptance and tangible support for individuals on the autism spectrum.

As Autism Awareness Month begins, SLBMC is making a strong call to action for residents across the nation to move beyond conversations and actively participate in advocacy that creates real change in healthcare, education, and social inclusion.

“True advocacy is not a passive stance; it requires continuous, intentional action from every corner of our society,” said Dr. Saleem Hughes, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SLBMC. “When we say that every life has value, we must back that up by dismantling the barriers that prevent individuals with autism from accessing the care and opportunities they deserve. Our collective duty is to build an environment where they don’t just exist, but truly thrive.”

In line with this push for action, SLBMC is encouraging the public to actively participate in and attend the various community events taking place throughout the month of April. From educational workshops to sensory-friendly activities, supporting these initiatives directly empowers the local autism community and its allies.

To visually demonstrate solidarity, the medical center is asking the entire community to join them for a special “Light It Up Blue” campaign on Friday, April 24, 2026.

“We are inviting everyone, whether you are at work, at school, or at home, to light it up blue by wearing blue on Friday, April 24th,” Dr. Hughes added. “It is a simple but incredibly powerful way to show families navigating autism that they are seen, valued, and fully supported by their community. Let’s paint our twin islands blue and let that visibility serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility.”

Looking ahead, SLBMC is also preparing to host a national town hall titled “Bridging the Gap: A National Conversation on a Neuroinclusive Road Map to Health, Education & Employment.” Convened through the hospital’s Pediatric Department, this event is designed to bring focused attention to the systems, structures, and supports required to better serve neurodivergent children, adolescents, and adults in Antigua & Barbuda. The Town Hall will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 5PM at the SLBMC Auditorium.

SLBMC remains dedicated to expanding its services and improving outcomes for all children across Antigua & Barbuda. The community is urged to support local autism initiatives this month and commit to advocacy that makes a lasting difference.
