BREAKING: Antigua and Barbuda to Head to Polls April 30 as Browne Seeks Renewed Mandate

Antiguans and Barbudans will head to the polls on April 30 following the announcement of a snap general election by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, setting the stage for an intense campaign period just months after the start of the year.

The next day will be a public holiday as announced by Browne. Normination Day will be on April 13th.

Speaking at The People’s Place during the launch of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) “Big Red Machine” campaign, Browne told thousands of supporters that the decision to call early elections—despite the constitutional timeline extending to 2028—was grounded in confidence and momentum.

“We are ready,” Browne declared, pointing to what he described as years of steady progress and transformation under his leadership.

Central to the ABLP’s pitch for re-election is its record on economic recovery and expansion, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has highlighted strong tourism rebound figures, increased airlift, and renewed investor confidence as key indicators of progress.

Major infrastructure projects have also been a cornerstone of the administration’s achievements. These include ongoing road rehabilitation works across the island, upgrades to the V.C. Bird International Airport, and continued investments in housing developments aimed at improving access to affordable homes.

The government has also pushed forward with initiatives in Barbuda, including land development and tourism-related projects, which officials say are intended to create jobs and stimulate economic activity.

Browne emphasized that his government has focused heavily on empowering citizens, particularly through education, entrepreneurship, and social support programmes.

Scholarship opportunities and skills training initiatives have been expanded, while small business support—especially during and after the pandemic—has been framed as a critical lifeline for many families.

The administration has also increased pension benefits and public sector wages in recent years, moves that have been welcomed by many but also scrutinized by critics concerned about long-term fiscal sustainability.

Improvements within the healthcare sector have also featured prominently in the ABLP’s record. Investments in the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, expansion of services, and ongoing plans to strengthen primary healthcare delivery are among the areas the government says demonstrate its commitment to public health.

Additionally, he says the administration has continued to modernize public services, with efforts to digitize government operations and improve efficiency across ministries.

On the international stage, Browne’s government has played an active role in regional diplomacy and global advocacy, particularly on issues such as climate change, small island vulnerability, and financial access.

Antigua and Barbuda’s successful hosting of major international conferences, including preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), has also been highlighted as a sign of the country’s growing global profile.

The launch of the “Big Red Machine” campaign drew thousands of supporters, creating a sea of red in what party officials described as a powerful demonstration of grassroots support.

Browne told the crowd that the upcoming election is not just about retaining power, but about continuing a path of progress.

“We have laid a strong foundation, but there is more work to be done,” he said.

With the election date now set, attention is expected to shift quickly to the opposition’s response, as both major parties ramp up campaigning in what is shaping up to be a closely watched contest.

It’s not a win if you’re not going to do like Mia. So Browne make sure your game up. We don’t want a Ralph around here and we certainly don’t want to know the UPP exist
