Lasean Bully, of Cashew Hill; Wayne Thomas, of Hatton; and Saleim Harrigan of Greenbay — are charged with killing Nigel Christian

Three men standing trial for the murder of senior Customs official Nigel Christian each took to their feet on Tuesday and told the court they did not do it.

Saleim Harrigan, Wayne Thomas and Lasean Bully — accused of abducting Christian at gunpoint from his McKinnons home in July 2020 and shooting him dead — each delivered statements from the dock as their defence cases closed, with closing arguments now set for Wednesday.

Harrigan not only denied killing Christian but he also pointed the finger back at police and the Crown’s star witness and insisting that DNA evidence linking him to the crime had been fabricated. “Any clothing that has my DNA that police say they find was planted by them and [the driver],” he told the court.

Wayne Thomas appealed to the human cost of the ordeal, telling Justice Rajiv Persaud that the experience had shaken him to his core. “This has been the hardest thing I have had to go through in my life — being accused of something I did not do,” he said, adding that he is a father whose children depend on him.

Lasean Bully kept it short and simple. “I know nothing about the murder of Nigel Christian. I am innocent,” he told the court.

All three men exercised their legal right to make unsworn statements, meaning the prosecution could not cross-examine them. The case now moves to closing arguments on Wednesday before a verdict is eventually delivered by Justice Rajiv Persaud.

  1. I’m waiting to see the direction that this case moves in! There won’t be justice if these guys are held innocently but neither if they are released and they are guilty. The drivers remarks were wrong? That’s what they are saying? Andddd that means if they are released who’s going to protect the crown witness?

  2. This is a serious case… three men all denying involvement, so now it really comes down to what the evidence shows.

  3. At the end of the day, the court has to decide based on facts, not emotions or statements from the dock.

  4. Everyone saying they’re innocent is expected, but now it’s up to the judge to separate truth from claims.
