Antigua and Barbuda is poised for a significant boost in cruise tourism following high-level engagements at one of the industry’s most influential global events.

A delegation from the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), led by CEO Colin C. James, participated in Seatrade Cruise Global 2026, held from April 13 to 16 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The team included senior tourism and port officials who met with some of the world’s leading cruise operators over an intensive three-day schedule.

During the conference, Antigua and Barbuda held 16 high-level meetings with major cruise partners, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Group, MSC Group, and Disney Cruise Line, among others. These discussions have already translated into tangible gains for the destination.

The country is set to benefit from a marked increase in cruise calls across multiple lines, further solidifying its position as a key port in the Eastern Caribbean. MSC Group alone has confirmed 12 calls in 2026, with that number expected to rise sharply to 41 in 2027.

This includes visits from its luxury brand, Explora Journeys.

A major highlight will come on December 7, 2026, when Antigua and Barbuda welcomes the maiden revenue call of the MSC World Europa, bringing approximately 5,250 passengers to the island.

Royal Caribbean Group is also projecting 112 calls in the upcoming season, while Oceanus will maintain a steady presence with 52 annual calls, ensuring consistent, year-round activity in the cruise sector.

Beyond increased arrivals, several cruise lines have expressed strong interest in establishing homeporting operations in Antigua and Barbuda. Industry executives pointed to the country’s efficient port infrastructure, strong airlift connectivity, and strategic geographic location as key advantages.

Tourism officials say these developments are being driven in part by high visitor satisfaction levels, with Antigua and Barbuda earning an average score of 88 out of 100. Friendliness and safety were identified as standout factors influencing cruise line decisions and repeat visits.

With projections of more than one million cruise passengers and over 400 annual calls in the next season, the destination is continuing to pursue a value-driven growth strategy. This includes enhancing visitor experiences through its beaches, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism initiatives.

The Seatrade Cruise Global conference, which attracted more than 11,500 attendees and 650 exhibitors, provided a critical platform for Antigua and Barbuda to strengthen partnerships and align with emerging industry trends such as sustainability, experiential travel, and artificial intelligence.

Officials say participation in the event underscores Antigua and Barbuda’s upward trajectory in the cruise sector, with increased calls, expanding luxury offerings, and growing confidence from global cruise partners positioning the country as a premier Caribbean destination.

  4. Tourism is the most important sector in our economy. Yet still our country is not so good for tourism attraction. I hope that once Mr. Fernandez gets back in office after this election, he does what’s right. Same for Mr and Mrs. Browne, as well as Mr. Turner
