Dr. Sir Cuthwin Lake
The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB) has joined in mourning the passing of Dr Sir Cuthwin Lake, describing him as a pioneering force in the development of the nation’s healthcare system. Dr Lake died on Monday night at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre at the age of 96, according to State Media.
In a statement, the executive of the MAAB paid glowing tribute to the veteran surgeon, saying he was “More than a surgeon; he was a pioneer who represented the very essence of progress in our healthcare system.”
Dr Lake’s long and distinguished medical career left a lasting imprint on the health sector in Antigua and Barbuda. He served as Medical Superintendent of Holberton Hospital during the 1990s, a period during which the institution underwent significant transformation. According to the MAAB, his leadership helped modernise hospital operations and improve the delivery of care to patients.
He also held the position of Chief of Surgery, where he was widely respected for upholding the highest standards of surgical practice. Beyond his clinical duties, Dr Lake played a key mentorship role, guiding and shaping a generation of Caribbean doctors who would go on to serve across the region.
The MAAB said his contribution to medicine in Antigua and Barbuda was immeasurable.
“His impact on the medical landscape of Antigua and Barbuda is immeasurable, and his loss is felt deeply by all who strive to uphold the excellence he championed,” the statement read.
Tributes continue to pour in from colleagues and members of the wider medical community, all recognising Dr Lake’s decades of service, leadership, and dedication to advancing healthcare in the country.
