Prime Minister Gaston Browne writes letter to President Donald Trump expressing solidarity regarding White House incident
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to U.S. President Donald Trump expressing relief that he was unharmed following a reported armed incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday evening.
In a letter dated April 27, 2026, Browne, on behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, extended concern not only to President Trump but also to his wife and others present at the event.
The Prime Minister strongly condemned the incident, stating that no grievance or political disagreement can justify violence against democratic institutions, elected officials, members of the press, or citizens exercising their rights.
“My Government stands with the United States in affirming that democracy must be defended by law, reasoned debate, respect for institutions, and peaceful civic conduct,” Browne said, adding that violence has no place in public life.
He also commended U.S. law enforcement officers for their swift and professional response, which he said prevented a potentially greater tragedy. Browne further extended best wishes for the recovery of the officer injured during the incident.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s solidarity with the United States, emphasizing support for both its government and people in the aftermath of the event.
