Closed Seasons Announced for Lobster and Parrotfish to Protect Marine Stocks

Parrotfish and Lobster season now closed

The Fisheries Division in Antigua and Barbuda has announced the start of annual closed seasons for key marine species, aimed at protecting fish populations during their critical spawning periods.

Effective May 1 to June 30, the harvesting of Caribbean spiny lobster is strictly prohibited. In addition, a ban on parrotfish, commonly known as “chub,” will run from May 1 to July 31.

Authorities are reminding fishers, vendors and the general public that it is illegal to catch, sell, purchase or even possess these species during the closed seasons. Violations can result in hefty penalties, including fines of up to EC$50,000.

The Fisheries Division says the measures are part of ongoing efforts to support the recovery of marine stocks and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s fishing industry.

Officials continue to urge compliance, noting that protecting spawning species is essential to maintaining healthy fish populations and preserving livelihoods within the sector.
