The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) convened a high-level meeting with local, regional, and international observers as part of its final preparatory activities ahead of the General Elections scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026 (tomorrow).

The engagement, which took place at the John E St. Luce Financial Centre, served as an important platform to brief observers on electoral procedures, operational readiness, and the Commission’s commitment to delivering a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process.

In his welcome remarks, Chairman of the Commission, His Excellency Ambassador Arthur G Thomas, extended a warm greeting to all observers and underscored the critical role they play in strengthening public confidence in the democratic process.

“Your presence here reflects a shared commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability,” Ambassador Thomas stated.

“The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission has worked diligently to ensure that every eligible voter is afforded the opportunity to participate freely and fairly in these elections. We welcome your oversight and value your contribution to reinforcing the integrity of our electoral system.”

Ambassador Thomas further emphasized ABEC’s adherence to established electoral laws, regional best practices, and international standards, noting that the Commission remains steadfast in its duty to conduct elections that reflect the will of the people.

Providing an overview of the extensive work undertaken in the lead-up to Election Day, Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Ian S. Hughes, outlined the Commission’s comprehensive preparations.

These include the finalization of the voters’ list, training of election officials, distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, and the implementation of robust logistical and security arrangements across all polling districts.

Mr. Hughes also highlighted the Commission’s ongoing voter education initiatives aimed at ensuring that electors are well-informed about voting procedures, polling locations, and their rights and responsibilities on Election Day.

“We have placed significant emphasis on readiness, accuracy, and efficiency,” Mr. Hughes explained. “Our teams have been working assiduously to ensure that all systems are in place for a smooth electoral process. We remain confident in our preparations and committed to facilitating an orderly and credible election.”

Observers were also briefed on polling day protocols, counting procedures, and the transmission of results, and were provided the opportunity to engage directly with ABEC officials to seek clarification and share perspectives.

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission reiterates its commitment to transparency and encourages all stakeholders, including voters, political parties, and observers, to work collaboratively to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

The observers got the opportunity to field questions to the ABEC’s Chairman and Supervisor of Elections in efforts to further expand their understanding about the process.
