Clerk ordered to repay employer after pleading guilty to fraud
A former store employee has been ordered by the High Court to reimburse her employer after admitting to using his debit card for unauthorized online purchases.
Jamila Edwards, who was 27 when the offence occurred in 2023, pleaded guilty to fraud and was sentenced yesterday. The court directed her to repay a total of $6,000, with $3,000 due immediately and the remaining balance to be paid in monthly installments of $500.
The case revealed that Edwards had been employed as a clerk at Super Power when she was entrusted with assisting her employer in obtaining a new ECAB debit card. In September 2023, she helped complete the application and later set up online banking access for him after the card was issued.
The fraudulent activity went unnoticed until the cardholder travelled to Miami and found his card repeatedly declined. Upon returning to Antigua, he contacted his bank and discovered that multiple transactions had been carried out without his approval.
Investigations showed that between September 12 and October 20, 2023, the card was used to make purchases on the online retailer Shein, totaling $5,797.53.
The matter was reported to police, leading to Edwards’ arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
