Prime Minister Gaston Brownes mourns Philbert Mason
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has joined the nation in mourning the passing of veteran broadcaster and national figure Philbert Mason, describing him as a patriot whose contributions to Antigua and Barbuda will long be remembered.
In a message of sympathy to Mason’s family, Browne said he was extending condolences on behalf of the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, paying tribute to a man he called a compatriot, friend and comrade.
The Prime Minister praised Mason for the calming role he played during some of the country’s most difficult moments, especially during Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Luis in 1995. Browne said Mason’s unmistakable voice became a source of reassurance for many as he guided the nation through dangerous weather events.
For generations of Antiguans and Barbudans, Mason was more than a broadcaster. He was regarded as a trusted voice during emergencies, helping residents remain informed and composed when uncertainty loomed.
Browne also reflected on Mason’s service beyond broadcasting, noting his longstanding involvement in politics through the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, where he served as vice chairman over several terms and supported the party’s development over the years.
He described Mason as a committed nation-builder whose contributions extended into entrepreneurship and public service. The Prime Minister also pointed to Mason’s recognition at the 1995 National Awards Ceremony as evidence of his impact on national development.
Saying the country has lost a highly valued son, Browne noted Mason’s life was marked by service, generosity and dedication to Antigua and Barbuda.
