Antigua and Barbuda was among the nearest populated areas to a mild earthquake recorded in the northeastern Caribbean earlier today.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre reported that a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck at 11:36 this morning local time, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The epicentre was located approximately 138 kilometres southeast of St. John’s, with coordinates placing it closer to Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, which lay 103 kilometres to the north-northeast. Brades, Montserrat was the third nearest populated centre, situated 158 kilometres to the north-northwest of the epicentre.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor and are often felt but rarely cause damage.
The UWI Seismic Research Centre has cautioned that the location is preliminary, having been automatically calculated by computer algorithms, and remains subject to revision pending full evaluation by analysts.
