Final-year students at the Antigua & Barbuda College of Advanced Studies are entering the workforce with a stronger understanding of their rights after participating in an industrial relations presentation hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union.
The session was led by Kem Riley, President of the union, and focused on preparing students for upcoming internships required as part of their studies.

Students were guided through Section C of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Code, which outlines several key employee protections and workplace standards. Topics covered included employment contracts and documents, working hours, overtime and premium pay, sick leave entitlements, and the right to join a union.
The presentation also encouraged student participation, with many raising questions about workplace expectations and labour rights as they prepare to transition into professional environments.

According to Riley, the initiative forms part of the union’s wider effort to educate young workers and help prevent exploitation caused by a lack of awareness about labour protections and employee benefits.
Students reportedly welcomed the session, describing it as informative and practical, particularly as many prepare to enter workplaces for the first time through internship programmes.

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union extended best wishes to the students as they move into the next stage of their academic and professional journeys.

This is the kind of education students actually need before entering the real world.
Far too many young workers get taken advantage of because they don’t know their rights. Good initiative.
