Antiguan and Barbudan cricketer Matthew Miller is off to a remarkable start in England after becoming the first recipient of the Antigua and Barbuda–Bede’s School cricket scholarship, with performances that have quickly drawn attention in the 2026 season.

Miller has scored 463 runs from 11 innings, including a top score of 102, and is averaging an impressive 66.14 with the bat. His tally includes one century and three half-centuries, along with 37 fours and 27 sixes, and he has yet to register a duck.

He has also made useful contributions with the ball, taking 15 wickets from 50.4 overs. His best figures of 3 for 6 highlight his impact as a developing all-rounder, alongside a bowling average of 18.67 and an economy rate of 5.53.

His progress was witnessed on Thursday, 21 May, when Antigua and Barbuda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Karen-Mae Hill, attended one of his matches alongside Third Secretary Caleb Gardiner. The visit offered a first-hand look at Miller’s development within the programme.

In a statement, the High Commissioner praised Miller’s progress and said his performances reflect the value of creating structured opportunities for young athletes through education and sport, noting that he continues to represent Antigua and Barbuda with distinction abroad.

The scholarship programme was established through cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and Bede’s School to strengthen sporting and educational links between the Caribbean and the United Kingdom, while providing pathways for talented young cricketers to gain international experience.

The initiative was supported through connections made by former professional footballer Calaum Jahraldo Martin, a Bede’s alumnus, who helped facilitate engagement between both parties. Since then, the partnership has included a cricket tour to Antigua in 2023, with another scheduled for February 2027, where further scholarship opportunities are expected.

Former Minister of Sport Daryll Matthew and cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards have also engaged with the school as part of ongoing efforts to support the programme’s development.

Bede’s School, based in Eastbourne and Sussex, is regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s leading independent schools with a strong sporting tradition. West Indies white-ball captain Shai Hope is also among its alumni.

Miller’s early success is being seen as a strong example of how international partnerships and targeted youth development programmes can help Caribbean athletes transition onto bigger stages.
