Scrub Life Cares Marks Five Years of Empowering Women and Girls Through Health Expo
Scrub Life Cares is preparing to host the fifth edition of its annual Grow With the Flo Women & Girls Health Expo this weekend, continuing a mission that organizers say goes far beyond menstrual health awareness.
The event, scheduled for Saturday at the Cana Moravian Church Grounds in Swetes Village, has grown from a grassroots effort tackling period poverty and menstrual stigma into one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most recognized community wellness initiatives.
Founder and Executive Director Tanya Ambrose said the expo has evolved into a platform focused on education, empowerment, reproductive health, mental wellness, and community support for women and girls at every stage of life.
Ambrose noted that while menstrual health remains a central focus, the initiative also seeks to create open conversations around topics that many families have traditionally struggled to discuss publicly, including puberty, reproductive health, consent, hygiene, and emotional wellbeing.
The organization says many women and girls across Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean still face barriers related to menstrual and reproductive health, including limited access to products, inadequate education, and social stigma. According to Ambrose, these challenges can affect confidence, school attendance, mental health, and overall quality of life.
This year’s expo will feature expanded discussions on maternal and child health, nutrition, disability inclusion, sexual and reproductive health education, and community wellness. Organizers say the family-friendly event will include educational sessions, health resources, wellness booths, interactive activities, giveaways, youth learning spaces, and the distribution of menstrual and hygiene products.
New additions this year include an Open Closet initiative designed to provide free clothing and support in a dignified and accessible setting, along with the return of the Nutrition Station.
Ambrose credited the event’s continued growth to strong community and corporate support, as well as partnerships with healthcare professionals, volunteers, and advocacy groups who share the organization’s mission of building healthier and more informed communities.
She said one of the most rewarding outcomes over the past five years has been seeing young girls and families become more comfortable discussing health issues openly and confidently.
The expo forms part of Scrub Life Cares’ wider Menstrual Health Awareness Month activities and its ongoing “Period-Friendly Antigua & Barbuda” campaign, which advocates for more supportive schools, workplaces, healthcare spaces, and public environments.
The 5th Annual Grow With the Flo Women & Girls Health Expo is free and open to the public.

Keep up the good work
