Janice Nix
An Antiguan woman convicted over the death of a five-year-old girl nearly 48 years ago in the United Kingdom is expected to be sentenced at a later date following a guilty verdict for manslaughter and child cruelty.
Janice Nix, 67, was found guilty at Isleworth Crown Court in London in connection with the death of Andrea Bernard, who died in July 1978 after suffering extensive burns from a scalding bath weeks earlier.
Nix was also convicted of cruelty to a child relating to Andrea’s older brother.
The decades-old case was revived after Andrea’s brother approached police in September 2022, urging investigators to revisit circumstances that had long been treated as an accident.
According to prosecutors, Andrea suffered severe burns on June 6, 1978, after allegedly being forced into dangerously hot water as punishment. The child sustained injuries to more than half of her body and later died from an infection linked to the burns.
Court proceedings heard that Andrea’s brother remembered his sister expressing fear about returning home from school after failing to obey instructions to stay home and clean. He later recalled hearing screams from upstairs and discovering Andrea unconscious with skin peeling from her legs.

Andrea Bernard died five weeks after suffering severe burns
Investigators reopened the case despite major challenges, including the destruction of medical records and the deaths of both the original pathologist and coroner involved in the 1978 inquiry.
The Crown Prosecution Service relied on surviving coroner’s records, witness statements and expert testimony to piece together the events surrounding the child’s death.
A fresh pathology review concluded that Andrea’s injuries were inconsistent with an accidental scalding and determined the water temperature would have caused severe burns within seconds.
Prosecutors also highlighted inconsistencies in Nix’s statements over the years. In her original account to the coroner in 1978, she reportedly claimed Andrea had gone upstairs alone to bathe while she was in the garden. However, decades later, she allegedly told police she heard Andrea screaming and found her struggling to escape the bath.
Nix was arrested at Heathrow Airport on February 18, 2025, shortly after arriving on a flight from Antigua, and was formally charged the same day.
Aisling Hosein of the Crown Prosecution Service described the matter as a deeply disturbing case and credited Andrea’s brother for helping bring the prosecution forward after so many years.
The court is expected to hand down sentence at a later hearing.

News houses don’t do research before they post? She’s not an Antiguan. I commented on another news media as well, and instead of accepting my comment they edit the comment and then reply. She’s from the UK.
She is Antiguan. Check the following link – look at the information from the police body camera. She has 2 passports. She clearly states that she has an Antiguan passport. The other one is obviously British.

I thought it was only “Hispanics” and “Jamaicans” who go into other peoples country and kill innocent people!! Antigua racist nfk and the people out here doing worse!!
So if you think so please make some space. Excuse yourself
That’s all yal can say meanwhile allowing ur country to go to the dogs! Yes we will make more room so u can be mediocre in the land you pretend to care about. Clowns
@Anonymous, she is not a born Antiguan. She may hold an Antiguan citizenship. She could be a Jamaican, Guyanese, Dominican, or from other Caribbean countries, but not a native born of Antigua and Barbuda.
I am not saying that Antiguans cannot commit crimes abroad; however, this lady is not a native born.
Love point fingers as far as I know Antigua have all peach
48 years later and we are opening up a case based on the account of one man that was a child at the time so I’m sure he’s lost to what he’s saying but is still facing the grief of his sister? Hmmmm
Be he not quick to judge less he be judge. The time is coming where all evil that is hidden will be openly exposed and to shame. Every violent act will be judge by God and rendered no more. No sin not one goes unpunished. The day is coming when the heavens over their heads shall be like brass and their day shall be like midnight. Every story has an end. Innocent 5 years old. May the Lord help us. That woman live out her youth and adulthood that baby never did
Amen. Some people think that God is sleeping and prayers are unanswered. I am sure the little girl family and friends had prayed for justice. The waiting is worth it.
She was 19yrs at the time. Being a stepmother at that age must be difficult at any era of time. She was wrong for her actions. Time always wins.
so true she was only 19 years old and a step mother of at least 2 children. Probably in a trapped abusive relationships herself. Not make any excuses but it the reality then 48 years ago. Even in Antigua and throughout the Caribbean woman and children received slavery punishment by men . Children hands were held in boiling water for stealing two fried dumplings. 48 years ago she was probably forced into this relationship to survive in the UK. Not making any excuses but the racism 48 years ago lead to the death of many West Indians people at the hands of abusive and racism systems in many developed countries.
19 years my foot! Janice is a known criminal! antigua.news you should’ve also inform the people that she spent more than 17 years in prison for drugs. She led a life of crime in the 1970s and ‘80s as a drug dealer. You know what that means between that time, little Andrea was killed. This prison thing is no knew to her so she wouldn’t care. Now antigua.news, you see how justice is being served! TELL ANTIGUA TO WAKE UP!! Let’s get justice for all our little boys and girls who died at the hands of someone and still no justice to this day! If this woman can be taken to court 48 years later, we can get justice after 1 year, two years, 3 years and more. Let this case serve as a long and lasting reminder that God doesn’t sleep and Karma rotates with the earth. Now put this born criminal away. And she is not Antiguan.

Research YouTube for more information on her.
I wonder if this conviction will even hold. I get that her brother was fearful of the repercussion when he was younger, but once he reached adulthood and was no longer in her care he should’ve come forward.
In any event, kudos to him for doing the right thing and let’s hope her conviction isn’t overturned.
Lord have mercy Christ have mercy, that’s all I will say for now.
I believe she migrated to England at a very young age and maybe her parents or father is not originally from Antigua or she got married because her last name is not local for sure. Yeah well she did some demonic evil work and murdered an innocent defenceless child 48 years ago. That child was born in 1972 or 73 meaning she would of been about 53 or 54 today..Robbed that little girl of her future while she lived 48 years probably got married had children and grandchildren. God nar sleep.
Remember, what’s hidden in the DARK, will be eventually revealed in the LIGHT…
Well done to the brother of the deceased for coming forward. Justice served
I remember fasting and praying for justice to be served to families who are searching for closure to gruesome cases like this. There’s not a day that God goes to sleep. He may be quiet for sometime but certainly not asleep people of God lets continue to fast and pray!
Just watch her ugly ole ass
People change names over years. Do some research. She was Janice Thomas when she killed the girl. SMH
