
Esteemed Choir Director and Educator Dr. Renee Smith Dies at 48
The cultural and educational communities are mourning the passing of beloved choir director, educator, and mentor Dr. Renee Smith, whose death was confirmed early Thursday morning. She was 48 years old.
Dr. Smith was widely known for her years of dedicated service as director of the National Youth Choir, where she helped shape and inspire generations of young singers through music, discipline, and mentorship. Her influence extended far beyond the choir stage, touching the lives of countless young people across Antigua and Barbuda and the wider region.
A gifted musician and accomplished academic, Dr. Smith also spearheaded the formation of the UWI Five Islands Singers, a vocal ensemble made up largely of former National Youth Choir members. Under her leadership, the group delivered performances at local, regional, and international recitals and concerts, earning praise for their musical excellence and professionalism.
Tributes are pouring in as former students, colleagues, and members of the artistic community, many describing Dr. Smith as a transformative figure whose passion for music and education left a lasting mark.
“She was a gifted choral director, a masterful singer with a vast range, an inspiring and humble educator and academic, a wise counsellor, and a beautiful soul,” one tribute read.
Dr. Smith earned her PhD from Walden University and was recognized for her outstanding contribution to music and youth development. She received a Special Recognition Award at the Antigua and Barbuda National Music Awards 2025 for her years of service and commitment to the nation’s cultural landscape.
