Member of Parliament for St. George and Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, the Honourable Michael Freeland, is extending heartfelt congratulations to Antiguan cricketer Shawnisha Hector following her selection to the West Indies Women’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Hector, who hails from New Winthorpes in the constituency of St. George, has earned a place among the region’s finest players as the West Indies prepares for its quest to capture a second ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title, ten years after their historic 2016 triumph.
Freeland described Hector’s achievement as a proud and defining moment not only for St. George, but for Antigua and Barbuda as a whole.

“Shawnisha Hector’s selection to the West Indies Women’s team is an extraordinary accomplishment and a powerful reminder that greatness can emerge from any community once there is discipline, sacrifice and belief,” Freeland said.
“To see a young woman from New Winthorpes rise to represent the entire Caribbean on the world stage fills all of us in St. George with tremendous pride. Shawnisha has become an inspiration to countless young people, especially young girls who now see that their dreams are valid and achievable.”
Freeland praised Hector’s hard work, dedication and perseverance, noting that her journey reflects the strength and resilience of Antiguan youth.
“Success at this level does not happen by accident. It comes through years of commitment, hard work and determination. Shawnisha has earned this opportunity, and the entire nation will now rally behind her as she wears the maroon colours with pride.”
The St. George parliamentary representative also encouraged young athletes across Antigua and Barbuda to use Hector’s achievement as motivation to pursue excellence in sports, education and life.

The West Indies Women’s squad will be led by captain Hayley Matthews and features experienced stars including Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor as the regional side looks to reclaim global glory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Freeland wished Hector and the entire West Indies Women’s team success throughout the tournament and expressed confidence that they would make the Caribbean proud.
