The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) Water Business Unit will undertake an overnight underground scanning exercise along sections of High Street and St. Mary’s Street in St. John’s beginning Friday evening.
The operation, which runs from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 29, to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, will be conducted in collaboration with overseas technical specialists using specialized equipment designed to scan beneath the road surface.
APUA said the exercise will help identify existing underground utilities and assess subsurface conditions as part of preparations for upcoming infrastructure works.
The data collected will support the planned introduction of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), a trenchless construction method that allows pipelines to be installed and rehabilitated with minimal road excavation. Officials say the approach is expected to reduce disruption to traffic, businesses, and road users in affected areas.
In a public advisory, APUA is asking motorists to avoid parking on the southern side of High Street and St. Mary’s Street during the overnight period to ensure crews can safely and efficiently carry out the work.
The utility company apologized for any inconvenience and thanked the public for its cooperation, noting that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the country’s water infrastructure.
