Major Dam Projects to Boost Farming and Food Security

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a major agricultural water infrastructure programme aimed at boosting food production and strengthening climate resilience.

Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith told Cabinet that construction on a new dam in the Table Hill Gordon area is nearing completion, while additional work is underway on a major agricultural dam project in Bethesda.

Officials said the Bethesda Dam initiative is expected to become a flagship agricultural project because of its location within an area containing more than 50 acres of productive farmland.

The Government believes the expanded water infrastructure will significantly improve irrigation capacity, reduce the impact of drought conditions, and increase domestic food production.

Cabinet also noted that the project will support the Ministry’s tissue culture programme and create opportunities for farmer training, youth involvement, and climate-smart agriculture.

Authorities say the initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernize agriculture and reduce Antigua and Barbuda’s dependence on imported food products.
