Oil Spill at APUA

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) says significant progress has been made in response efforts at the former Friars Hill Power Station following the fuel seepage discovered at one of the facility’s storage tanks.

In an update issued Monday, APUA confirmed that arrangements have now been finalized to begin transferring fuel from the affected tank as part of ongoing containment and cleanup operations.

According to the Authority, a local fuel contractor has agreed to accept the fuel, and preparations are currently underway to safely remove and transport the remaining contents from the site.

Officials say containment measures implemented earlier continue to remain effective as authorities work to manage the situation and reduce environmental risks.

Once the fuel transfer process is completed, APUA says focus will then shift to the removal and disposal of materials used during the containment and cleanup operation.

The utility company said it continues to work closely with the Department of Environment, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the Central Board of Health, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), and several other agencies to ensure all cleanup and disposal activities are carried out in accordance with environmental and public health standards.

APUA says it remains committed to handling the matter safely and responsibly while maintaining close coordination with the relevant authorities throughout the process.

The Authority also thanked members of the public for their patience and support as response efforts continue at the former power station site.
