Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, Hon. Rawdon Turner, has paid tribute to the nation’s centenarians, describing them as “living history” and a source of inspiration whose lives have helped shape Antigua and Barbuda.
In a message marking Centenarian Week, Turner reflected on the contributions of men and women who have reached the extraordinary milestone of 100 years and beyond, noting that their experiences embody resilience, sacrifice, faith, determination, and love.
“Our centenarians are more than witnesses to history, they are living history,” Turner said. “They have endured hardship, celebrated triumphs, raised families, built communities, and helped shape the nation we proudly call home.”
The minister praised the elderly for their steadfastness through decades of social, economic, and cultural change, emphasizing the invaluable wisdom and guidance they continue to provide to younger generations.
Turner said the contributions of senior citizens cannot be measured solely by economic standards but are reflected in the strength of communities, the values upheld by society, and the opportunities available to future generations.
“As Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, I want every centenarian and every elderly citizen to know that you are valued, respected, and deeply appreciated,” he stated.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring seniors can age with dignity and continue to play meaningful roles in national life.
“A society is judged not by how it treats its strongest members, but by how it honours and cares for its elders,” Turner said. “That is why our government remains committed to creating communities where our seniors can age with dignity, receive the support they deserve, and continue to play a meaningful role in national life.”
He thanked centenarians for their endurance, service, compassion, and faith, describing them as national treasures whose stories continue to inspire the country.
“You are our storytellers, our teachers, our inspiration, and our living legacy,” he said.
Turner encouraged the public to use Centenarian Week as an opportunity not only to celebrate those who have reached 100 years of age but also to recognize and support all elderly citizens throughout the year.
On behalf of the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, he extended gratitude and admiration to the nation’s centenarians and seniors, noting that their journeys continue to light the way for future generations.

This brought tears to my eyes. Our seniors are treasures.
Minister Turner spoke the truth. We need to celebrate our elders more often, not just one week a year
