The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is exploring new opportunities for cooperation with Japan following a recent official visit by Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith and a delegation to the Asian nation.

Cabinet received an update on the visit during its latest meeting, where the minister outlined a series of high-level discussions focused on agriculture, fisheries, marine conservation, education, and sustainable development.

According to the report, the delegation met with senior Japanese government officials, including representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss avenues for technical and financial cooperation.

One of the key areas of focus was the modernization of Antigua and Barbuda’s fisheries sector. The minister said discussions centered on securing technical assistance and grant funding to refurbish and upgrade fisheries infrastructure across the country. Japanese officials also provided guidance on the processes required to access funding and technical cooperation programmes through established diplomatic channels.

The delegation also explored opportunities to improve local fish and vegetable markets as part of broader efforts to strengthen food security, enhance agricultural value chains, and create greater opportunities for farmers, fishers, and vendors.

Cabinet was further informed that meetings were held with representatives of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and affiliated organizations, which have supported fisheries and marine development initiatives throughout the Caribbean and other developing regions.

A major topic of discussion was the growing challenge posed by sargassum seaweed. The parties examined potential collaboration on solutions, including the establishment of a seaweed management and processing facility in Antigua and Barbuda.

Government officials believe such a project could help address environmental concerns while creating new economic opportunities from the utilization of sargassum, which continues to impact beaches, coastal communities, and the tourism industry.

Educational and cultural exchanges also featured prominently during the visit. Japanese officials reportedly expressed interest in expanding student exchange programmes and strengthening academic partnerships between institutions in Antigua and Barbuda and Japan.

Cabinet welcomed the prospect of increased educational cooperation, particularly in fields such as marine sciences, agriculture, technology, and innovation, which are considered critical to the country’s long-term development goals.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of sustainable ocean management, marine conservation, and policies that support investment in the blue economy. Government officials noted that these areas remain central to Antigua and Barbuda’s strategy for achieving sustainable economic growth while protecting marine resources.

Cabinet welcomed the outcomes of the mission and expressed confidence that the relationships forged and strengthened during the visit will lead to meaningful cooperation and tangible benefits for the people of Antigua and Barbuda in the years ahead.
