The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation on Thursday joined family members in Antigua and New York in celebrating the remarkable 101st birthday of Mrs. Mary Alexandrina Lewis, affectionately known as “Vida”—a beloved matriarch whose life of faith, resilience, service, and love has touched generations.

The virtual celebration brought together relatives, government officials, and community representatives to honour a woman whose century-long journey reflects the strength, values, and enduring spirit of Antigua and Barbuda.

Born and raised in Bolans, Mrs. Lewis attended Cedar Hall Moravian School and was deeply rooted in the faith of the Cedar Hall Moravian Church. Throughout her life, she drew inspiration from her favourite scripture, John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you.” It was a message of hope and comfort that she faithfully shared with her children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Delivering remarks on behalf of Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Hon. Rawdon Turner and Minister of State Hon. Kiz Johnson, Acting Permanent Secretary Mrs. Almira Henry described Mrs. Lewis as a national treasure.

“We join in celebrating and honouring Mrs. Mary Alexandrina ‘Vida’ Lewis on reaching this extraordinary milestone of 101 years,” Henry said. “The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation recognizes her as a living legend and a treasure.

We give thanks to God for blessing her with a purpose-driven life and for preserving her health and strength throughout the years.”

Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts also conveyed congratulations on behalf of His Excellency Governor General Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams, noting that Mrs. Lewis’ life represents far more than longevity.

“Today we celebrate much more than 101 years,” Sir Clare said. “We celebrate a woman of unwavering faith, quiet service, resilience, and unconditional love—a woman whose life story spans more than a century of our nation’s history and whose values have helped shape family and community alike.”

Director of the Community Development and Citizen Engagement Division, Ms. Dale O’Brien, reflected on Mrs. Lewis’ lasting contributions to her community. Renowned throughout Bolans for her exceptional gardening skills, Mrs. Lewis cultivated beautiful flower gardens that earned numerous awards and grew produce that helped support both her family and the local market.

A devoted mother, Mrs. Lewis raised seven children, and her legacy has flourished across generations. She is now the proud matriarch of 19 grandchildren and more than 25 great-grandchildren.

Following the passing of her husband, Mrs. Lewis relocated to New York City, where she has remained a cherished and unifying presence within her ever-expanding family.

The celebration featured a touching poem titled “101 Years of Grace,” delivered by her granddaughter, Tanena Aaron, and a special musical performance by Pastor Delano Jacobs of Hopeful Hearts Ministries.

The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation reaffirmed its commitment to honouring the nation’s centenarians, wherever they may reside, recognizing them as living treasures whose lives, wisdom, and contributions continue to inspire generations of Antiguans and Barbudans.
