Andre Simon

The man accused of dangerously driving the vehicle involved in the crash that ultimately claimed the life of national cyclist Andre Simon is expected back in court later this month to answer the charge.

The 36-year-old father-of-one was seriously injured in the horrific 2022 Mother’s Day vehicular accident when a motorist ploughed into him and three other cyclists during a training ride on Sir George Walter Highway.

He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre for some time for brain injuries before he was transported to the TIRR Memorial Hospital in Texas on July 2, 2022.

He died exactly one year later.

Now, Kenyatta Benjamin of Hatton appeared before Justice Ann Marie Smith on Monday and was ordered to return on June 30 for arraignment proceedings. If he pleads not guilty, the matter will be set down for trial.

The charge relates to a collision on Mother’s Day in May 2022 along Sir George Walter Highway. Prosecutors allege that Benjamin’s vehicle struck a group of four cyclists who were on a training ride. The cyclists were Andre Simon, Sean Weathered, Ghere Coates, and Tiziano Rosignoli.

All four men were taken to hospital following the incident. Weathered, Coates and Rosignoli later recovered and were discharged. Simon, however, sustained catastrophic injuries, including serious head trauma and internal bleeding.

The 36-year-old father remained in the Intensive Care Unit at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre for several weeks before being airlifted to the TIRR Memorial Hospital in Texas on July 2, 2022, while in a wakefulness coma.

Simon died in the United States approximately one year and one month after the crash while still undergoing medical treatment.
