Saliem Harrigan has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Nigel Christian

Saleim Harrigan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2020 murder of Principal Customs Officer Nigel Christian, with the High Court ordering that he serve a minimum of 40 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration.

The court ruled that the time Harrigan has already spent on remand will be credited toward his sentence.

Harrigan was convicted earlier this year for his role in the abduction and killing of Christian, whose death sent shockwaves across Antigua and Barbuda and prompted one of the country’s most extensive murder investigations.

Christian was abducted from his McKinnons home in July 2020. His body was later discovered in Thibou’s, where he had been shot to death.

The case attracted widespread public attention throughout the investigation and trial, with prosecutors alleging that Christian was forcibly taken from his home before being murdered. Following the presentation of evidence, a jury found Harrigan guilty of the offence.

Two other men charged in connection with the case, Wayne Thomas and Lasean Bully, were acquitted after the court found there was insufficient evidence to convict them.

With sentencing now complete, Harrigan will remain behind bars for at least four decades before his case can be reviewed for possible parole.
