A 63-year-old man was stabbed in the shoulder during a violent gold chain snatching on Armstrong Road on Friday afternoon, in what is the latest in a series of similar robberies targeting unsuspecting residents.
According to reports, the victim and his wife had just finished selling rice pudding in the CMC area and stopped at a superette on No. 2 Armstrong Road. While the woman went inside the business, the man remained seated in the vehicle parked outside.
It was then that two young men reportedly approached the vehicle from a northerly direction. One of the suspects allegedly reached into the vehicle and grabbed the gold chain from around the man’s neck.
The victim reportedly resisted, leading to a struggle during which he was stabbed in the right shoulder with what is believed to have been a pair of scissors.
The suspects then fled on foot, heading east towards Kentish Road with the stolen chain before escaping the area.
The injured man sustained a wound to his shoulder, while police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The attack comes amid growing concern over a recent spate of gold chain snatchings across Antigua, several of which have occurred in broad daylight. Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the latest incident and investigations are ongoing.
