Senator Fabian Jones took his oath of allegiance in the Senate on Monday, returning to the Upper House after the Barbuda Council advised Governor General Sir Rodney Williams that he would be reappointed.
Jones, a member of the Barbuda People’s Movement, took his affirmation shortly after the sitting opened with Senate President Alincia Williams-Grant welcoming him back.
Jones’s return completes the Senate which has seen a changing of the guard with several youth picks by the government and main opposition parties.
Speaking on the Fatal Accidents Bill 2026, Jones kept his contribution brief, focusing on a single point that had run through much of the day’s debate.
The Senator focused on Clause 2 and 4 of the bill, where in its interpretation section expanded the definition of dependent, however argued that the same category of person was not captured under Clause 4, which governs who may claim damages for bereavement.
Under the Bill, dependents include anyone who had lived with a deceased person in the same household for at least three years before the date of death, and who lived during that period as husband or wife of the deceased.
