Government Says Airport Runway Project Will Be Fully Funded
The Government has assured the public that whatever financing is required to complete the rehabilitation of the V.C. Bird International Airport runway will be provided.
The assurance came after questions were raised during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing about an approved EC$80 million loan and whether the amount exceeded the estimated cost of the runway rehabilitation project.
Responding to the query, Maurice Merchant said the government remains committed to ensuring the project is completed without compromise.
“The airport rehabilitation, its runway cannot be halfway done, and so whatever funding is required to ensure that it’s fully completed will be met,” Merchant added.
The comments come as work continues on the runway rehabilitation project ahead of the busy tourism and Carnival season.
Government has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of how the full loan allocation will be utilized but stressed that completing the airport infrastructure remains a national priority.
