Cost Pro Supermarket abruptly closes it doors permanently

Employees of Cost Pro Supermarket were left shocked Thursday evening after the company abruptly ceased operations and informed staff that the business was closing permanently, leaving dozens uncertain about their wages, severance, and other employment benefits.

Workers were reportedly told around 6:00 p.m. that the supermarket was shutting its doors with immediate effect.

A termination letter dated July 9, 2026, issued by Cost Pro Management, states that the closure is due to the “permanent closure of business” and advises employees that their positions have become redundant.

“We regret to inform you that Cost Pro Supermarket will be closing its business operations permanently and will no longer operate,” the letter states.

It further advises that employees’ final day of employment is July 9, 2026, and says the company will review payroll records to determine outstanding payments, including accrued vacation pay, notice pay where applicable, and severance in accordance with Antigua and Barbuda’s labour laws.

According to the letter, workers are expected to receive a separate payment statement by July 17, outlining any amounts owed to them. Employees have also been instructed to return company property, including uniforms, identification cards, keys, equipment and documents.

However, the sudden closure has sparked concern among employees.

Allegations circulating among workers claim that the company and its owner may be preparing to leave Antigua and Barbuda as early as Friday. Those claims have not been independently verified.

Employees have also alleged that, despite the issuance of the termination notice, they have received no firm commitment regarding the payment of outstanding wages, severance, or other statutory benefits.

The abrupt nature of the closure has left many workers scrambling for answers, with several expressing concern about how they will meet their financial obligations while awaiting any final payments.

It remains unclear what led to the supermarket’s decision to cease operations.

Union representatives are currently at the supermarket meeting with staff. The Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin has been informed.
