Prime Minister Gaston Browne with María Fernanda Espinosa
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has described Antigua and Barbuda’s decision to nominate a candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General as a historic milestone, marking the first time since Independence that the twin-island nation has put forward a nominee for the world’s highest diplomatic office.
Reflecting on the outcome of the 51st CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Saint Lucia, Browne said the nomination represents a significant moment in the country’s diplomatic history and underscores Antigua and Barbuda’s expanding influence on the international stage.
The Prime Minister announced that Antigua and Barbuda has formally nominated and endorsed María Fernanda Espinosa for the post of United Nations Secretary-General.
Browne praised Espinosa’s international record, describing her as a leader with the experience and vision needed to guide the United Nations through an increasingly complex global environment.
“Her exceptional record of leadership, unwavering commitment to multilateralism, and proven advocacy for sustainable development, climate resilience, gender equality, and the interests of Small Island Developing States make her uniquely qualified to lead the United Nations at this critical juncture,” Browne said.
He added that Antigua and Barbuda is confident Espinosa possesses “the vision, experience and integrity required to guide the Organisation through the complex challenges of our time.”
The Prime Minister also welcomed the fact that the Caribbean Community has produced two candidates for the prestigious international position, saying it reflects the region’s growing diplomatic influence and leadership.
“I am equally pleased that CARICOM is represented by two highly accomplished candidates for this important office. Their candidacies reflect the depth of talent, principled leadership, and international credibility that continue to emerge from our Caribbean Community,” Browne said.
Looking ahead, Browne reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and ensuring that the concerns of smaller nations continue to receive global attention.
He said the country will continue advocating for “a more inclusive, responsive and representative multilateral system—one in which the voices of all nations, regardless of size or economic power, are heard, respected and reflected in global decision-making.”
The Prime Minister said Antigua and Barbuda is proud to have played a role in advancing a candidate whose priorities align closely with the interests of Small Island Developing States and the broader international community.
