West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers

Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Dr. Kishore Shallow has paid an emotional tribute to the late Sir Garfield Sobers, describing the Barbadian icon as “the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen” and a man whose influence transcended sport to become a symbol of Caribbean pride and identity.

In a statement issued following Sir Garfield’s passing on Friday at the age of 89, Shallow said the cricket legend’s life had become inseparable from the hopes and aspirations of generations of Caribbean people.

“There are moments in the story of a people when the life of one individual becomes woven into the hopes, dreams, and identity of generations,” Shallow said. “Today, the Caribbean mourns the passing of such an individual.”

The CWI President said Sir Garfield’s extraordinary career not only transformed the game of cricket but also helped define the Caribbean’s place on the global stage during a pivotal period in the region’s history.

“There are champions. Then, there are those rare individuals who redefine the very meaning of greatness,” he said. “Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen.”

Shallow noted that while Sobers’ brilliance with the bat, ball and in the field earned him worldwide acclaim, his greatest legacy was the inspiration he provided to people across the Caribbean and its diaspora.

“He emerged from the Caribbean at a time when our region was finding its voice and asserting its place on the world stage,” Shallow said. “Through his excellence, he gave millions across our islands and in the diaspora, a renewed belief in what was possible.”

According to Shallow, Sobers proved that greatness was never determined by the size of a nation or the circumstances of one’s birth.

“He showed that greatness was not confined by the size of our nations, the geography of our islands or the circumstances of our beginnings,” he said.

The CWI President described Sir Garfield as more than a sporting hero, calling him a lasting symbol of Caribbean excellence, resilience and possibility whose achievements brought pride to Barbados and admiration from cricket fans around the world.

Shallow also reflected on the personal impact Sobers had on his own life. He recalled competing as a young cricketer in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Under-19 Cricket Tournament, saying he was privileged to receive guidance and encouragement directly from the legendary all-rounder.

I remain grateful not only for that opportunity, but for the encouragement, wisdom and support he personally shared with me over the years,” he said. “His kindness and influence will forever remain a treasured part of my journey.

Concluding his tribute, Shallow said Sir Garfield’s passing marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in cricket history, but not the end of his influence.

Sir Garfield Sobers has completed his final innings, but his legacy will forever endure in the hearts of our region, and the story of the cricketing world,” he said.

On behalf of Cricket West Indies, Shallow extended condolences to Sir Garfield’s family, the Government and people of Barbados, and cricket lovers across the globe as they mourn the loss of a man widely regarded as the finest all-round cricketer the sport has ever produced.
