Veteran Engineer Girvan Piggott Appointed Antigua and Barbuda’s New Director of Energy

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has appointed veteran engineer Girvan Piggott as the country’s new Director of Energy, a move officials say will strengthen efforts to modernise the nation’s energy sector and expand the use of renewable energy.

Piggott officially assumes the role on August 1, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience in the energy and utilities industry. Before his appointment, he served as a Project Engineer at the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), where he was involved in the planning and execution of several key infrastructure projects.

Minister of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), Utilities and Energy, Melford Nicholas, announced the appointment and formally introduced Piggott to members of the Ministry’s Energy Unit during a welcoming meeting.

Nicholas described the appointment as a significant step for the Ministry as it continues to pursue the Government’s long-term energy objectives.

Mr. Piggott’s technical expertise, leadership experience, and commitment to public service make him an exceptional addition to the Ministry’s leadership team,” the minister said. “His appointment comes at a critical time as we continue advancing renewable energy initiatives, energy security and sustainable development for Antigua and Barbuda.”

As Director of Energy, Piggott will be responsible for leading the Energy Department and overseeing the implementation of national energy policies and programmes. His portfolio will include initiatives aimed at improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy opportunities and supporting the Government’s vision of creating a more resilient and sustainable energy sector.

The appointment comes as Antigua and Barbuda continues to invest in renewable energy and climate resilience, with the Government seeking to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while improving the reliability and affordability of electricity.

Officials expressed confidence that Piggott’s technical background and years of experience in the utilities sector will help guide the country’s ongoing energy transformation and support the delivery of sustainable energy solutions for the benefit of all citizens.

  1. With all said about Mr. PIGGOT, My concerns are: what is budget level, his human resource support, his criss functional authority. Then I I will look out for his activity plan including timeliness and scheduling.

    Good luck.
